There are quite a number of characters in this novel and they are:
Bruno - A nine year old boy, who enjoys exploring and adventure. Bruno is smart and enthusiastic and very much hates his sister, Grete, as a Hopeless Case. Bruno has a German background and has a wealthy family of 4. Bruno is born on April the fifteenth, nineteen thirty-four.
Shmuel - Also a nine year old boy but has a Jewish background. He was born on the same day with Bruno on April the fifteenth, nineteen thirty-four. Compared to Bruno, Shmuel is smaller and skinnier in appearance. Shmuel lives with no one, as he was separated from his parents and now has to live in a concentration camp without his parents for the rest of his life.
Gretel - A twelve year old girl that has a younger brother, Bruno. She personally thinks that she is a matured and smart girl. She still enjoys playing with dolls but after meeting her private tutor teacher, Herr Liszt and Lieutenant Kotler, she steadily began getting over her toy dolls. After Bruno dies, she can't get her mind off her long-lost brother.
Father (Ralph) - Is a father of Bruno and Gretel and has a wife. Ralph has a job as being a Chief Commandant of the Auschwitz Concentration camp. He is a patriot and sees himself as a good person doing the right thing for the country and others. Ralph is very self-disciplined. He expects quite a fair amount of respect from his two children as he wants his children to look up to him.
Mother (Elsee) - The wife of Ralph and the mother of Gretel and Bruno, their two children. As the novel progresses on, the mother's attitude changes and steadily challenges her husband, Ralph, of what he should be doing.
Pavel - Use to be a doctor of some sort, but now is a prisoner that helps out in the Out-With. He is works as a waiter and peels vegetables at Out-With.
Lieutenant Kotler - A Nazi soldier who roams around Bruno's new house. He has a nasty personality and treats the Jews like they are not even supposed to be living in the society. He was moved to the front when he failed to inform the authorities that his father left the country just before the war.
Maria - Is an over-paid maid that helps out in Out-With, cleaning and making sure the house is neat and tidy.
